The Main Library will host a two-day carnival for all reading club participants, birth to grade 6, who have reached the first level in their club. This includes participants who have read at least 6 books in the preschool - picture book club, or have read at least 4 books for the chapter book club. The carnival will be held on Thursday, July 29th from 1pm - 3:30 pm and from 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm, and continue on Friday, July 30th from 10am - Noon. No registration required - summer reading club participants are welcome to come anytime between the hours listed on the day most convenient for them.

Free tickets for games will be awarded at the door. Parents are invited to bring a camera to take fun photos of their kids in action! Those unable to attend the carnival may pick up their prize packets in the Children's Department prize packets may be picked up in the Children's Room on or after Monday, August 2nd . Prize packets must be picked up by 5pm on Saturday, August 28th.

Shining Light Across America

As part of the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America, Northeast Indiana Scouts invite local residents to a historic event Saturday, July 31, at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. It's called A Shining Light Across America

Fort Wayne will link to the Centennial Celebration Show, part of the 2010 National Scout Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill Virginia, and will be one of only six events in the country to feature a two way satellite connection enabling Scouts in Fort Wayne to interact with the expected 60,000 Scouts and volunteers in Virginia.  Excerpts from the local show will be broadcast nationwide, and around the world online. 

Scouts and community members will shine a light on Scouting through the following exciting presentations and activities:

Family Fun Zone: (National Guard climbing wall and obstacle course, US Army climbing wall,
Air Zoo F-16 Procedures Trainer, TagArt face painting, tattoos, story telling, Fort Wayne Children's Zoo, Science Central, Canlan Ice Sports bounce apparatus and much more);

Silly Mascot Invitational Olympics: The Cub Scout Mascots invite: Icy D. Eagle of the Komets, The Mad Ant, Johnny from The Tin Caps, The Don from IPFW, and Johnny Cougar of USF to participate in some fun and challenges;

Miami Nation of Indiana ceremonial dance and drumming.

Magician and inspirational speaker, Giovanni Livera will capture the imagination with his presentation, "Anything is Possible;" and
Two-way satellite link to the Centennial Celebration Show in Virginia.

Doors open at 4p.m., the local program will begin at 6p.m. and the program will conclude at 9:30p.m.  Tickets are available now through TicketMaster.

Boys Scouts of America, Anthony Wayne Area Council serves youth in Adams, Allen, DeKalb, Huntington, Jay, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Noble, Steuben, Wells and Whitley Counties with over 8,000 youth and 2,800 adult volunteer participating in 2009.

Dealing With Difficult People: A hostage negotiator shares his conflict-resolution tips on film at Lifetree Caf Sunday night August 1st at 6:30 7:30 PM. The Lifetree event will suggest ways for dealing with difficult people in everyday situations.The program provides practical help to diffuse conflict with others at home, in the workplace, at school, and elsewhere. Though few people ever have to negotiate a hostage crisis, the police who handle these situations have discovered some approaches that can help anyone in a conflict.

Admission to the 60-minute event is free. Snacks and beverages will be available. Lifetree Cafe is held at The Mocha Lounge, 6312 Covington Road. Lifetree Cafe is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual coffeehouse-type setting. Everyone is welcome.

The Children's Department will present "Pajama Story Time" sessions on Tuesday evenings, August 3, 10, 17, and 24. Each "Pajama Story Time" evening will offer two sessions, the first from 6:30 - 7:00 pm and the second from 7:15 - 7:45 pm, and a special Ice Cream Party will be offered at 7pm on Tuesday, August 25, between Pajama Story Time sessions. Children ages 3 - grade 2 are invited to attend, wearing their pajamas and bringing their favorite teddy bear or stuffed animal.

August's Miami Indian Heritage Days will feature Katrina Mitten. Mitten will showcase Native American Bead Work on August 7. Sponsored by the History Center, Miami Indian Heritage Days programs are held from 1-4 pm on the first Saturday of the month, May through November, and feature local artists, performers, and representatives from the Miami Indians and other Native American groups demonstrating aspects of their lasting heritage for the public to enjoy.

Admission for each Saturday event is $7 adults and $5 students and seniors. History Center members and children ages 5 and under are free. Admission also includes the opportunity to visit the Chief Richardville House, 5705 Bluffton Road, Fort Wayne. Persons visiting the Chief Richardville House can also view a Miami long house that is currently under construction.

Programs coming up: The fall program continues on September 4 when Dani Tippman presents "Miami Harvest" on edible and usable plants and materials. M.I.A.M.I. (Miami Indiana Alliance of Miami Indians) will present programs on October 2 about traditional wikiami building and cattail matting.
November 6 and 7 is Traders Days. Vendors, craftsmen and artists sell quality Native American items including fine art, gourd work, beading, carved wood pieces, corn husk dolls, Christmas ornaments, Native American shields, jewelry, clothing, feather work, homemade baked goods and more.

Traders Days events are free to the public and are open Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 4 p.m. Miami Chief Jean Baptiste de Richardville built a trading empire in this area that made him the richest man in Indiana by the time of his death in 1841. His home, built in 1827, is one of the premier attractions in the Historical Society's collection since the restoration of the building's exterior. Today his house is recognized as the oldest Native American dwelling in the Midwest and the first Greek Revival style house in northeast Indiana.

The Alzheimer's Association's Memory Walk, is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research programs. Held annually in hundreds of communities across the country, this inspiring event calls on volunteers of all ages to become Champions and raise funds to support the fight against Alzheimer's. Champions include those living with the disease, families, caregivers, corporate and community leaders, who actively support Memory Walk in our community. The Fort Wayne Astronomical Society invites everyone to come to Fox Island County Park to use our observatory and telescope. Public stargazing is offered every clear Saturday night from April to November starting one hour after sunset and continuing for two hours.

Families with children are welcome to use the observatory. There are bathrooms, but they are rather primitive, so using facilities at home is recommended. On these clear Saturday viewing nights, Astronomy members are available to answer your questions. You may also bring your own telescope to the site and receive help to use it more effectively. Fox Island is also the home to our monthly meetings where the Society offers a variety of educational events including films and lectures. Everyone is welcome to attend. A group designed for men who find themselves in the role of caregiver for members of their families due to all kinds of traumatic events. It's a fact that men process information and feelings differently than women, so this group will offer a place for men to interact with each other in a way that is most beneficial to them. The facilitator is Pastor Jim Evans, Jr. who conceived of the idea because he is the chief caregiver in his home due to his wife's chronic battle with cancer.

Cancer Services is the local non-profit organization that provides practical resources, emotional support (through client advocacy and support groups) and information to people with cancer and their families. More information about this organization can be found at www.cancer-services.org.
