Japanese Woodworking: Morning Glory Lantern

Description:

This Japanese lantern combines delicate paper with heavier architectural frame elements, yielding a pleasant balance of forms. The square legs enclose the lantern and support a solid wood top, with mitered corners. The side openings are covered with shoji rice paper to cast a warm glow from the light within. The lantern will cast a warm glow wherever you place it. You’ll assemble your own Morning Glory Table Lantern, choosing to make it from pre-cut recycled or new lumber. (Please specify your choice of new or recycled lumber and bring a sack lunch.) August 19; 8:00– 9:30 p.m.; $4 per person; guests under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian The Site’s naturalist will lead guests through Sower’s Woods to introduce them to the creatures of the night! Bats, owls, moths and other critters may make an appearance. Depending upon the clarity of the sky, star gazing will be available to identify major constellations, satellites and other celestial bodies by telescope thanks to Fort Wayne Astronomical Society. Bring binoculars for a closer view of the stars!

Self-Expression in Water Soluble Media

An intensive exploration of techniques using three water-soluble drawing media: water-soluble graphite pencils, watercolor pencils, and Tombow markers. You’ll create washes, layer color, and define shapes and shadows. These media and styles are well suited to travel journals. Maren will demonstrate each type of water-soluble medium while emphasizing loose, quick drawings. Accomplish at least one sketch in each of the three media and then combine different media in one sketch. This experience is all about experimentation with the media and doesn’t have to result in a “finished” piece. Designing Dolls: Developing Your Own Textile Figure

Do you have ideas for uniquely designed dolls, but don’t know how to go about making those ideas reality? Like the idea of creating a doll, but don't know how? This is for the adventuresome; no patterns are handed out! Through one-on-one interaction with Jennifer, learn how to develop your ideas into three-dimensional shapes from flat fabric and hand-drawn patterns. Learn about special fabric usage and embellishments, drawing/painting faces, and creating needle-sculpted faces. Participants will produce at least one of their own uniquely designed dolls. Basic sewing machine skills and knowledge of your own well-working machine are required.
